Books have always accompanied the biography and the work of Carolu Ruf
- first of all as a bibliophilic passion, later mainly as artistic material. Since 1992 she has made books the topic of an artistic sequence, both in their actual existence and in their medial function - a sequence which developed parallel to a both pictorial and three-dimensional work process. In both cases, paint and material are arranged in layers in the artistic procedure. In all the works the book remains the visible starting point. However a new approach and perception are demanded, since the original medial, communicative and historic meaning is missing. And this, exactly, is precisely the artist's intention: she wants to dissect the selfevident object/ware "book" methodically and give it her own message. However, she does not want to destroy a medium of information, but artistically to change its semantics through which further tactile qualities are permitted to become visible and touchable. The book, the oldiest print product, today a normed mass product, is realized again in its original meaning as a cultural vessel and storehouse.
